Fridge Freezers—Today & Yesterday
Fridge freezers are items that are found in every home today. But, in years past, they were found primarily in the homes of wealthy individuals.
By the 1950s most families, particularly in cities, had an electric refrigerator, which replaced the icebox. The icebox replaced the outdoor ice house and the root cellar. So, in its time, the icebox was a technological advancement.
Today, iceboxes are antiques; collectible items. Most are made of oak or pine. They make lovely pieces of furniture, particularly in older homes.

Rare finds are lined with porcelain, which helped to keep the food colder. But, since we don’t have an iceman delivering door-to-door and we are accustomed to the convenience of frozen foods, most of us would feel that an electric refrigerator, with an attached freezer was more practical.
The attached freezer is a relatively new advancement. The oldest models had just a small space, only big enough to hold an ice tray or two.
Homes with a separate freezer or “deep freeze” were common in the 1940’s, 1950s and up into the 1960s. They made it possible for families to store large quantities of food, sometimes from one season to the next.
Side-by-side fridge freezers and other designs became commonplace in the 1970s and 1980s, as did the popularity of TV dinners and other frozen foods. Banning of the refrigerant Freon did not slow down technological advancement, nor even raise the prices much, as some feared it would.
Today’s refrigerators come in a variety of styles, colors and sizes. You can get fingerprint-proof doors, created by using a textured, rather than a flat material. In-door icemakers and chilled water dispensers are popular features. Not only is that feature an added convenience, leaving the door closed saves electricity.
Most brands are equipped with a filter to improve the taste of tap water and to reduce some chemical contaminants. Some models have a status indicator to let us know when it’s time to change the filter.
Rollers on the base of today’s fridge freezers allow for easier cleaning, underneath and behind. Keeping the back and bottom free of dust improves the energy efficiency and the lifespan of the unit.
